Water Availability

Water availability risk relates to water shortage. The following map and graphs detail values of water availability and water demand per sector using the 'Falkenmark Index'. Also known as the 'water stress index', it is one of the most commonly used measures of water scarcity. The index assesses water availability risk by linking the quantity of water available to the population of a given region.

Water availability is calculated at the governorate level, according to the setting of the hydrological model (see above).

Water Quality

Salinity and bacteriological contamination impact the quality of drinking, irrigation and bathing water. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a measure of the quality of water for drinking and agriculture based on the level of salinity. The group of organisms found in the intestines of animals and humans called Faecal Coli (F. Coli) is one of the most used measures of bacteriological contamination of water. The presence of the bacteria indicates that human or animal faeces may be present in the water and could contain other potentially harmful organisms that could cause illness.
